The Colorado basketball season started off with a huge match-up on Tuesday, Dec 1st, against defending State Champions Overland HS v a 2016 title contender George Washington HS. Overland quickly stormed out to a 20 point lead behind the play of seniors De’Ron Davis (SR) and Jervae Robinson (SR). De’Ron Davis ended the evening with 26 points on 10-13 from the field, 6-7 from the free throw line, 12 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 blocks. Jervae Robinson added 18 points on 4-8 from the field (2-2 from three), 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Freshman Stephen Hayes added 9 points and 3 rebounds in his varsity debut. Nick Holmes (JR) and Daijon Smith (Soph) also contributed for Overland. Reggie Gibson (SR) added 3 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Despite being down by over 20 points, George was determined to make a game of it. George Washington stormed back on the efforts of Calvin Fugett (Jr) and Daylen Kountz (Soph). Fugett scored 28 points (most of them coming in the second half) shooting 7-15 from the field and 11-11 from the free throw line. He also added 4 assists, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 4 blocked shots. Kountz also scored 28 points on 10-17 from the field and 8-10 from the free throw line. The defensive efforts of Calvin Fugett were supplemented by the 10 rebounds and 3 points of Sha’heem Speer (JR). Fellow Hawk Jon’il Fugett (Soph) chipped in 8 points and 5 assists.
George Washington’s comeback attempt came up a bit short as Overland outlasted George 86-79.
