The Colorado Hawks 13U team traveled to Kansas, with only six players, to compete in the MAYB Summer Kickoff June 12-14th. The team was place in one of the toughest pools and came in third in the pool with a 1-2 record losing some very tough games. This put us in the B-bracket. The first team we lost to, lost in the championship game of the A bracket and the other team we lost to made it to the Consulation game of the A Bracket.
The team played extremely well through bracket play and earned a spot in the championship game after defeating the Oklahoma – OKC Dawgs, Nebraska Sarpy Shock Green, Kansas OZ Elite, and Nebraska CNBA Black. These victories earned us a game versus a very good Oklahoma Southwest Elite team for the championship.
The championship game was one of the most exciting games of the weekend. Despite having six players who played 3 games already that day, the guys played extremely well. After falling behind by 15 points early in the game, we battled back to tie the game at 33 at half time. The lead changed between teams several times. We had a chance to win in regulation, but they got a steal and scored with 9 seconds left. We were fouled on the next possession and hit both free throws to tie the game with 1.7 seconds left. We played outstanding defense and got a steal to send the game to the first overtime. During the second overtime, we exchanged leads again and hit a layup to take the lead before they scored at the buzzer to send it into a third overtime. We finally wore down as one of our six players was hurt at the end of regulation and Southwest Elite was able to pull away and win 91-83.
It was a great outing and we earned the respect of several teams along the way. We were really pleased at how well the team played defense and shut down the opponent’s best player(s).
Congratulations on a successful weekend of improving and competing at a very high level. #HawksNation
