Marshall basketball: Herd routs Rio Grande
Canty’s 18 points leads seven double-figure scorers in 119-77 win

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Kareem Canty had 18 points and 11 assists and was one of seven Marshall players in double figures as the Herd rolled over Rio Grande for a 119-77 victory on Tuesday night at the Cam Henderson Center.
Elijah Pittman led Marshall with 29 points, while Ryan Taylor had 15 points and nine rebounds and Chris Thomas chipped in with 15 points, three assists and two steals. Shawn Smith, Tamron Manning and Austin Loop each had 11 points for Marshall, which held a 65-38 lead over its NAIA Division I opponent from the Mid-South Conference.
The Division I Herd from Conference USA hit 50 percent (9-of-18) from 3-point range and 60.6 percent (45-72) overall in the game. Canty, Pittman and Thomas were a combined 26-of-40 (65 percent) from the floor.
Jermaine Warmack’s 17 points and six assists led Rio Grande (2-1). Evan Legg added 14 points, and Travis Elliott and Ricky Tisdale scored 11 for the RedStorm.
The Herd returns to action on Sunday when it pays a visit to Morehead State for a 2p.m. meeting with the Eagles.
