HAWKS 7th Graders Take Second in 8th Grade Division in Vail!

Monday, August 2

Despite having only 6 players and playing 4 games in 24 hours, the HAWKS 7th grade team placed second in the 8th grade division of the Eagle/Vail MAYB tournament this past weekend.

The team went 4-1 in their season-ending tournament including an exciting win in the last 8 seconds over arch-rival Hiawatha Davis Recreation Center. The 7th graders, soon to be 8th graders, also had quality wins against Arvada, Douglas County, and Colorado Springs and completed their great season at 78-13.

Team members:

Devon Aguilar
Isiah Kampeska
Noe Magdaleno
Taylor Tortessi
Davaughn Thornton
Justin Matoke

Playing against bigger and stronger teams, the 7th graders held their own as Taylor, Davaughn, and Devon controlled the defensive boards and pounded the offensive glass. Guards Noe and Isiah drew rave reviews from the other coaches for their tenacity, scoring and fearlessness and Davaughn had the highlight play of the tournament with a steal and a slam over the opposing center in the final game against Colorado Springs. 12-year-old Justin also played a critical role in playing both guard and small forward in different games and by helping Devon to shut down Colorado Springs best player (4 points) in the final game.

Congratulations to the team for a fine tournament and a tremendous season and special thanks to the families and fans who supported us in Eagle/Vail.
